Astronomers Witness a Planet Being Born

ICYMI, a team of astronomers have for the first time observed the birth of a planet.

Theory has long held that planets form from the rotating clouds of gas and dust—protoplanetary disks—that surround newly-formed stars. Now, there is a credible observation of a planet-sized object orbiting in the protoplanetary disk of a young dwarf star named PDS 70.

A second group of researchers has already published a study estimating the characteristics of the new planet, which further study will be able to clarify.

“After decades of speculation, it’s nice to actually see one,” said Kevin Heng of the University of Bern, who did not work on either study. “It’s very comforting.”
