War Gaming introduced personal missions to World of Tanks in January of 2015; in the last two years thousands of players have ground out multiple campaign missions to achieve one of the four premium tank prizes. Along the way there’s been a bit of angst, a lot of grinding and a few needed changes for one of the better content additions to World of Tanks.

Recently the developers had a developer’s panel with the players. The video can be found here. I love that they are doing this, it’s great for the game and community. In general there’s some good stuff in the hour and a half of discussion. However, I’m going to concentrate on one area where they continue to get it wrong. There are two ways to win a match in WoT, and it’s hard to believe but that creates controversy. The two ways are related but it’s actually possible to win the match by doing one and not doing the other.

WoT is an incredibly unforgiving PvP game. Because there’s no respawn or HP recoup mechanism in the game mechanics, mistakes are punished immediately and permanently. What this tends to do is reinforce a mentality of passive play. That’s unfortunate because passive play is the primary cause of the majority of losses in WoT.

WG is working a new patch for WoT and that’s always (mostly) good news. 9.16 will be the next update and it’ll bring a couple things players have been wanting. It’ll also bring a controversial chat change and a couple content additions.
