Haruo Nakajima, First Godzilla Actor, Has Died

Haruo Nakajima, the first actor to portray Godzilla, died on Monday from pneumonia. He was 88.

Nakajima’s early roles were in samurai films, including a part in Kurosawa’s epic Seven Samurai. But then he found his true calling.

Nakajima first put on the monster suit in 1954 for the original Godzilla film, and wore it for eleven sequels. He claimed the suit weighed 220 pounds, saying in an interview that, “things like rubber were not available. Instead, they used ready-mixed concrete, so it weighed about 100kg. It was so heavy and hot, and with the lighting, it was even hot just to touch it. I was sweating all over my face, but I did the best I could.”

Over the course of his career, Nakajima had roles in some fifty films. But despite being one of the most famous monsters of filmland, he said “I do not consider myself as a star. I thought it was going to be just one or two films.”
