Jurassic World Still Doesn’t Mean We Can Make Dinosaurs

PSA time: Even though science has identified the overall genomic structure of dinosaurs, we still can’t grow them in the lab—no matter what the Jurassic Park franchise has always tried to imply.

Any dinosaur DNA retrieved from an insect preserved in amber would be too degraded to use, for one. The oldest DNA ever found is only a million years old, or about 65 million years more recent than the dinos. If by some stroke of luck we could extract dinosaur DNA, it would be a fragmented mess—not something that could be filled in with the DNA of a modern species, nor gestated in another species’ egg.

The good news is, dinosaurs survived at least four extinction events and proceeded to evolve into birds. If you squint, a hawk looks an awful lot like a velociraptor.
