New Tech Reveals Massive New Mayan Civilization

Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees.

A new technology called LiDAR (as in Light Detection And Ranging) has revealed the ruins of an ancient, extensive, and previously unknown Mayan civilization.

The network of cities was hidden by the jungles of northern Guatemala, and only revealed when researchers used LiDAR to digitally remove the tree canopy from aerial images of the area. “This entire region was a settlement system whose scale and population density had been grossly underestimated,” said Ithaca College archeologist Thomas Garrison.

At its peak 1,200 years ago, this civilization used raised roadways to connect metropolitan centers, quarries, and agricultural areas, used reservoirs to control its water supply, and may have supported as many as 10 to 15 million people.
