Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man Creator, Has Died

Steve Ditko, the comic book legend who created Doctor Strange and co-created Spider-Man with Stan Lee, has died. He was 90. Ditko was found dead in his apartment in New York City on June 29th. He never married, and has no known survivors.

Ditko left Marvel after a fight with Lee in the late sixties that was never explained or resolved. Ditko worked for DC Comics, Charlton, and a variety of independent comic publishers before he returned to Marvel in 1979. During his second tenure there, he worked on the Micronauts and created Squirrel Girl—one of his last characters.

Beginning in the 1970s Ditko became reclusive, although he continued to draw and write in his Manhattan studio until his death.

He will be missed.
