Tabby’s Star is Not Evidence of Aliens After All

All the excitement about an “alien megastructure” has come to naught.

The mysterious KIC 8462852—or, Tabby’s Star—was discovered by amateur astronomers in 2015. The star exhibited unusual dimming and brightening patterns, and professional astronomers who studied it stated that they could not rule out alien activity as the cause.

Alas, under the crowdfunded scrutiny of more than 200 scientists, the strange star 1300 light years from earth has lost its alien charm. The conclusion of a new study published recently in Astrophysical Journal Letters is that “Dust is most likely the reason why the star’s light appears to dim and brighten.”

Sorry, SETI. Maybe next time.
