“The Gunny” R. Lee Ermey Has Died

R. Lee Ermey, the acid-tongued gunnery sergeant from Full Metal Jacket, has died. He was 74.

“The Gunny” began his acting career after retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps, landing roles that made use of his military background. Ermey was a technical advisor to Francis Ford Coppola on Apocalypse Now, as well as playing a helicopter pilot in the film. He also played a Marine drill instructor in The Boys in Company C before landing the role that won him a Golden Globe.

Ermey’s other work includes roles in The Frighteners, Mississippi Burning, the rebooted Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Se7en, and voice work in the Toy Story series, SpongeBob SquarePants, and video games.

He will be missed.
