Valve Anti-Cheat Bans Hit Hard After 2017 Steam Summer Sale

Valve banned more than 40,000 Steam users the day after the 2017 Summer sale ended, making July 6 the highest single-day Valve Anti-Cheat ban count in Steam’s history. The previous high score was on October 12, 2016, when Valve banned 15,000 users.

The timing of the VAC bans seems to coincide with the opportunity for already-banned users to re-purchase lost games under a new Steam account—a great plan that seems to lead straight to a fresh re-ban.

The mass banning also seems to have been a thorough clean-up. Fewer than a thousand bans have been imposed each day since.
